About the Book

A Small Idea Starts with Noticing

Mia’s Clean-Up Crew is a story about what happens when a young girl looks at her neighbourhood and decides it deserves better.

Set in a seaside town on the Atlantic coast, the book follows Mia as her walk home from school turns into something bigger. She notices things other people have stopped noticing — a wrapper in the grass, a bottle in the breakers, a bag caught in the wind. With her friends Peter and Lucy, her Grand, and her teacher Miss T, Mia learns that one person looking carefully is how a town starts taking care of itself.

Written for early readers and the adults who read alongside them, Seeds of Change is the first book in the Eco Series — a growing collection of picture books that introduce young Canadians to the small, everyday practices of caring for the places we live.

What Children Will Take Away

Age-appropriate themes chosen with early-years classrooms and home readers in mind.

1

Noticing as a Skill

The story begins with Mia paying attention to things other people walk past. Observation is the first step in every good idea.

2

Small Actions, Real Difference

A single piece of litter picked up is a small thing. A classroom that picks up together changes a street. The scale grows from the page outwards.

3

Teamwork Beats Going Alone

Each character brings something different — ideas, hands, laughter, wisdom. Caring for a place is easier and happier when it’s shared.

4

Places Deserve Care

The book gently introduces the idea that our towns, our coastlines, and our neighbourhoods are worth looking after — not because someone told us to, but because they’re ours.

Help Bring Mia to Life

Hand-Drawn by a Nova Scotia Artist

Mia, Peter, Lucy, Grand, and Miss T are being brought to life by a local Nova Scotia artist working in traditional hand-drawn style — no templates, no AI, no shortcuts. The character portraits above are early previews of that work.

Funding professional illustration is the difference between a book that exists and a book children want to read again. If you’d like to support the art and reserve signed copies and original character sketches, we’ll be announcing a supporter campaign soon.
